Mining has existed for thousands of years - the first pickaxe made and used for it was created in prehistoric times! As everyone knows, mining is taking resources and valuable materials out of the ground, refining (improving quality, smelting etc.) and selling to other companies to do whatever they want with it. The valuable materials can includes ores, like gold, iron, coal, tin and copper; gemstones, like diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires; and building materials, like quartz, limestone and sandstone.
Although mining gives us plenty of resources and materials to satisfy our needs and wants, it isn't the best thing for the environment. When we refine the ores retrieved from mines, we release gasses into our atmosphere, and pollute it. This can lead to global warming, which messes up the natural cycle of things, like precipitation (rain) and areas becoming hotter (kind of says that in the name). So mining can be good and bad for the human race.
