In our world, we need materials and resources taken from the ground by use of mines. Without these resources, we would have limited products, materials and our entire way of living would be taken away from us. For example, we would have no canned food, so food wouldn't last as long; supermarkets wouldn't even exist, as no metal for rebar in the concrete and they would wear away quicker; communications would be limited to cup and string, as satellites and phones could not be build without metals. And these are only a few examples.
So, mining and mined resources are super important to the survival of humanity, as our average life expectancy would decrease dramatically as well, due to minimal medicines and treatments. We would be living like people from the Stone Ages, with stone tools, having to hunt our own food and using rocks to start a fire. It wouldn't be as comfortable and easy as today's modern living standards. We would die decades earlier than nowadays average lifespan.
So mines are important to the world as they provide us with the majority of everything man-made on the planet. We would be centuries back in technology if we had never discovered that 'there is this hard, shiny stuff in the ground that we can make tools from and these dirty, black stuff to put in fires.'
